“On the 21st of May” is the title track of The Vernon Spring’s latest EP, the first chapter in a response work to Marvin Gaye’s seminal “What’s Going On” album of 1971. During the process of making this record and creating his arrangements of Marvin Gaye’s originals, entirely new compositions were also born and ‘On the 21st of May is just such a piece. In many ways this track is the cornerstone of the EP, as it encapsulates so many aspects of what make this a unique project: the bold use of space, avant-garde sampling techniques and gentle yet exploratory muted piano improvisations interweave to create a reverent atmosphere.
